Book Review 2019

The Kai Truck -TE RAU AROHA
Author: Aunty Bea-Piatanihi     Illustrator:Jui Yateo

The Kai Truck -TE RAU AROHA takes place in
World War Two but the truck is made in New Zealand. France and New Zealand are the two places that are mentioned in the book.
This book is about the adventures that the driver of the truck went on.
The truck has been shot by planes well it was driving
through the desert and it was captured by the Germans but the soldiers
they got the truck back. And eventually the truck got sent back to
New Zealand to visit all the Native Schools.
This book has a lot of paragraphs because it is a true story so it needs
to be long. There is an English version and a Māori version because
this story has a Māori version because it talks about a Māori batallion.
The Kai Truck -TE RAU AROHA used direct speech, alliteration e.g.
“rough, rocky” and imagery.
Te Rau Aroha is about a truck and although a truck usually doesn't
have traits, the book says,“Our truck is a YMCA fighting vehicle,
truly a treasure, he is a fighter, he is ours...”
The Kai Truck -TE RAU AROHA also talks about
the soldier warriors, it says “our strong, handsome
and clever warriors...”

No one in my group but me has a book about something
that actually happened. I think the book is exciting because
when something happens it makes me want to keep reading.
The Kai Truck is about war and I like stuff about war.
I recommend this book for Years 6 to 8 students because
the book is about war.

NOHO MARAE

NOHO MARAE

On Tuesday the 5th of March Room One and Room Eight  went to Arahura Marae
for an overnight trip.
When we got to the marae we did a powhiri. The powhiri process is when you
are welcomed onto a sacred area/ Marae.
I have never been to the marae before. After the powhiri process we went
to the wharekai to have morning tea.
A wharekai is a place where you eat. After everyone had eaten
we all went back into the wharenui. In the wharenui
everyone stood up and shared their mihi.  After everyone
had shared their mihi, they went down to
the river to look for pounamu.
A few people found some.

After a few minutes of searching we all went down to the beach to do a sculpture
building contest.
The sculpture had to be something with the legend of Poutini and Waitaiki.
My group made a sand sculpture of Waitaiki and after we did that we
went back but my group
smelled bad because of the wet sand.
When we went back into the wharenui we listened to the stories about the pou.

We split into three groups and each group got to choose a pou
and listen to its story. When we had finished listening to the stories
of the pou then we did some activities and after that we went to be
bed it was 10pm.

When we got up in the morning we packed up our mattresses and
then had breakfast. When everyone had breakfast and everything
had been cleaned up we got in the parents cars and drove to Lake
Mahinapua and did a walk. When we got to the lake we talked about
the war that had happened there there a long time ago. We walked
from the start of the track to
the edge of Lake Mahinapua. It was a bit misty
and there were some sandflies. Before wegot to
the cars we had
morning tea. After everyone had eaten we walked back to the cars
and drove back to school.

I think that the marae trip was good.

Callaghan's Ridge

On the 11th of April 2019 Rooms 1 and 8, Mrs Truman, Ms Kemp and 9 other
adults walked Callaghan's Ridge and we did a scavenger hunt. Here is some of the
things my group found: a sand fly, a blue mushroom, a tomtit and bracket fungi. When
we started the track it rained for a bit which was annoying. When we got to the lunch
spot we got into our afternoon groups. I was with Lily and Sasha and we built a bivouac
to eat our lunch under.

To make our bivouac we hung the tarp on a leaning tree then tied our rope to four other
trees. After everyone had finished eating we packed up the bivouacs and kept walking.
The track was muddy in a lot of places, it was really slippery.

We had to watch where we stepped so we did not fall over. A lot of people were covered
in mud and some people were throwing mud at each other but overall it was fun. What
I liked about going to Callaghan's Ridge is that we got a day off school doing something
I enjoy.

Beach Cookout

About the beach cookout: on a sunny day on the third of april 2019 room 1 and 8 went to
Karoro Beach by the Tasman sea beach for a cookout two people in my group didn't go
so we had a smaller budget it was 15$ other groups then the people that had everyone in
there group my group had three people in it also we made burgers and smores they were
really good. Mrs Mclean, teachers and peoples parents in my group we had me, Lily and
Sasha we left school at 11am and got back to school at one pm we built a pyramid shaped fire.

We got a few rock and we put them in a circle we put gorse,
kindling and lots of dry wood and sticks. After we made the burgers
we took the hot plate off the campfire that Sasha  brought and roasted the
marshmallows on the embers we put the marshmallow in two chocolate biscuits
after we ate it we put water on the fire from watson creek then we covered it with sand
after that we got a photo of us and then left. - Eamon
